Maximizing the Life of a Laptop Battery

One of the many reasons a person finds a laptop appealing is the fact that it comes with a battery. Naturally, the battery in itself is not as appealing as the overall convenience of being to use that battery when and where you find necessary. It is important to understand, however, that while a laptop battery has a lot of benefits, there are some disadvantages to laptop batteries as well. One of the main disadvantages is that a laptop battery normally only has a life of about two to three years. In addition to this, if you overwhelm your hard drive in your laptop with numerous tasks, the life span of the laptop battery will be even less than average. It is important that you understand ways to maximize the life of a laptop battery. Here, you will find many useful tips on how to do so.

One of the first things that you should do if you plan on using the laptop by battery alone is to ensure that the battery is fully charged prior to using it. In an ideal situation, you should charge the battery for approximately ten hours prior to using it on battery alone. This will ensure that all of the cells in the laptop battery are fully charged and functional. A computer system these days places a lot of strain on a laptop battery, so it is vital that the laptop battery has a full charge before committing the power of your laptop to depend solely on it.

It is important to understand that if you have a laptop battery that is losing power, it is best to allow it to run completely out of the power in reserve prior to recharging it. Constantly recharging a laptop battery that only has a small amount of power loss can place undue strain on the laptop battery. If the laptop battery experiences a lot of extra strain during its lifetime, it is sure to have a shorter life span overall.

When using the laptop on the laptop battery, you should try to run as few programs as possible. For example, it is not ideal to use the DVD player, and/or the CD ROM player on your laptop when you are depending on the laptop battery as a sole power source. It is important to understand that the more programs that you have running on your laptop, the less efficient that your laptop battery will be.

You should understand that there are numerous laptop batteries available that promise long life and strength. However, the life of your laptop battery depends more on the way that you use it and practice preserving it then it does on a name that is written on that battery. If you work diligently to maximize the life of your laptop battery, your laptop battery will surely have a longer life.
